Guide
Add citations to an essay
The Grainwrite editor turns the links in your text into numbered citations. When you export to .docx, it adds a References list at the end. It's built for essays, reports and papers that need sources.
Steps
- Open or start your document. Choose Open .docx to use an existing essay, or start typing in a new one.
- Add a link to the source. Select the words the source supports and add the link with the Link button.
- Turn the link into a citation. Click the link and choose Turn into citation. Repeat this for each source you use.
- Export. Export .docx. The numbered citations and the References list come out with your formatting kept.
Check the sources yourself
Grainwrite numbers the citations and builds the list, but it doesn't check the sources for you. Before you hand in a paper, open each link and confirm the author, date, title and page details are right. A citation list is only as good as the sources it points to.
Before you submit
- Check your school's or publisher's rules on citation style and on AI tools. Some require you to say how a text was written.
- If you rewrite a passage with Humanize, check that the sources still support the sentence after the change.
- Keep your original notes. The export is a new file, so your research stays where you saved it.
The editor is a writing tool. It helps you format and organize your sources. It doesn't decide what you should cite, and it doesn't replace reading the sources yourself.
